Activity Profile During Action Time in National Silat Competition
Abstract
Martial arts are a combat system of traditions and
practices, which made for a variety of reasons: self-defense, spiritual
development, competition, physical health and fitness, entertainment, and
mental and physical (Mohamed Shapie, Zenal, Parnabas, & Abdullah, 2016). Basically there are 13 skills in Pencak Silat
which will be discussed in the discussion section. Motives of martial arts or
self-defense can be defined as the intentions that cause a person to move, act,
or to behave in a certain way. SPSS software has been used to determine the
mean and standard deviation between Malaysia and the opponent. This is to
define the relationship between winning and losing of the athletes from
Malaysia.
Introduction
Pencak Silat is a well-known form
of martial arts practiced by the Malays in the island of Southeast Asia. It is one of the martial arts that involve
self-defense and attacking. Silat has been one of the sports being performed in
Sea Games. In Sea Games, men’s silat has 7 classes which is A, B, C, D, E, F
and H while the women categories has 3 classes which is B, C and D. The classes
are classified based on their body weight. Attached below are the
classifications of each classes:

Materials and Method
There are
13 basic skills in Silat which will be list below (Shapie, Oliver, O'Donoghue, &
Tong, 2013):
1.
Catch
Catch
the opponent’s body. For example, while the opponent tries to punch, catch his
hands. This action needs to be done fast as the opponent will attack in a very
fast and power movement.
2.
Topple
3.
Sweep
4.
Punch
5.
Kicking
6.
Fake Kick
7.
Fake Punch
Fake
punch are to be made to determine the opponent’s movements.
8.
Block
9.
Block and Punch
Block
the opponent’s attack and fire a punch on the limbs. It will give points to the
one who perform the action.
10.
Block and Sweep
While
the opponent tries to attack, stop his movement by moving to the opposite
direction and make a sweep by kicking the back of the opponent’s knee. He will
automatically fall down.
11.
Block and Kick
An
interception is easier to perform when the opponent telegraphs his intentions
before he attacks (Derderian, 2011). While the opponent tries to
attack, block the movement and attack back with a kick on his limb.
12.
Evage / Dodge
13.
Self-release
Statistical analysis
The software being used
is IBM SPSS Statistics version 22. SPSS has been used for creating and recoding
variables. It has three kinds of functions which include mathematical
functions, string functions and random number functions.

Discussion
Malaysia
has won the class B due to disqualification of the opponents, Vietnam (Semi
Final) and Thailand (Final). The two countries broke the rules by attacking the
illegal part of bodies which makes them disqualified from the game. While in
class D, Malaysia became the first runner up to Thailand. In class E, Malaysia
won over Singapore after the completing the third round. Sport fighters don’t
protect themselves from groin strikes. Their stances are designed to promote
maximum stability in the clinch instead of protecting the most vulnerable
target. (Richardson, 2017). The mean between Malaysia and Vietnam of class B in Semifinal
was 48.33:47.00. Through observations, Malaysia performed more attack than the
Vietnam athlete. While during final against Thailand, Thailand has made more
attacks which the mean outcomes are 47.67: 45.0. If Thailand was not
disqualified from the match, the possibility for the Thai athlete to win is
higher compare to Malaysia. Based on class D, Thailand has won the game even
though attacks were more on him because Malaysia has miss the target few times
which make the Thailand score the point. Lastly, in class E, Malaysia won
against Singapore and based on the actions of Malaysia, the mean is 46.33 which
is higher than the Singaporean which is 45.67.
Conclusion
To conclude, Malaysia’s
Pesilat has to practice more on blocking and counter attack to gain more
points. The mean shows that Malaysia has bigger chances to win but the lose
point due to miss target. The athletes need to practice more on their speed and
agility to fight the opponent since the opponent movements are way faster than
our own national athletes. Muscular endurance need to be included too during
their training to improve their fitness and muscle endurance. Basically, Malaysia
is good in Silat and has very high chances to win and conquer Silat in the
International level, but practice is needed to ensure that they can win the
game in future.
Recommendation
1.
Practice more on speed and power movements.
2.
Be alert as the opponents moves are fast.
3.
Be aware of the opponents’ attack movements.
4.
Strength training is important as it will affect
their hit.
